my big news

Wanna know my big news (if I haven't already told you)? I'm the new primary president in my ward. Beginning today. Officially. Do I know anything about primary? Not much. I did teach primary a few summers ago, but only about 4 times before I went back to college. Yeah. Go me. I'm. Freaking. Nervous. I've picked my counselors and that's about it. It'll be swell to see how this calling fits into everything else; good thing I'll have summer break to get it all figured out by the time school starts again next year. Also included in this big news is that Ben has been called to be Young Men's president. He's uber excited! So that's my (our) big news.

School Friday was joke. A complete joke. The kids were ANIMALISTIC CRAZY! I felt kind of like I was in that scene from the movie "Mean Girls," where they're in the lunch room and they start fighting, only they fight like lions or something. All the kids in the scene start walking/running on all fours and make roaring noises while they tumble on the ground in a spat. My students, all day, were like that.

I had a great time in 1st period trying to get 'em to SHUT UP and then once they did, the kid who's always farting started up again and I had to deal with him. 2nd period was better, like normally they are, and the only problem I had to deal with was another folder problem (one of my boys in the class showed me something someone had written on his folder. It was deplorable and made him almost cry, he was so upset by it. We remedied the problem by throwing that folder away and getting him a new folder to keep in my drawer, along with three other folders whose owners have had similar problems). 3rd period, I put a few journalism students right to work in doing computer inventory...I have a few that need major work. Then, I prepped them all by telling them that in the next few weeks, they'd be helping me dust and clean my room, top to bottom. They're absolutely thrilled!! I don't want to even remember 4th period. It gives me the shivers just thinking about it.

The second half of the day was also chaotic...except lunch; lunch is always good. 5th period a girl snuck an ice cream into my room and then, duh, it eventually melted because she just left it sitting on her desk. I had to 'hold the phone' for nearly half the class getting the mess cleaned up and rambling to my students that I'm not really a maid, promise! 6th period=yuck. I finally handed out ASD's to all who decided it would be a grand idea to interrupt me and then they didn't like me very much. 7th period I was quite cranky and exhausted, I handed the students the work, gave them instructions and told them to work quietly with NO talking. They could tell I meant business, so there were no problems.

I had department meetings after school. We talked more (and more and more and more) about CRT's, which start, for me, on Wednesday of this week. We're dealing with a very high stakes test here and all the information has overloaded my brain so I won't bore you with the information, but basically, if I get through the next two weeks I'll be much less stressed.

I also learned on Friday about yearbook day, which is planned for May 30. That's when we pass out the yearbooks and then the kids go outside and sign their little hearts out, leaving permanently on pages of my baby vulgar and icky messages. My next challenge is sorting through the pages of lists of students who have paid money for yearbooks but who still have big old fines that must be cleared before they can actually hold their yearbook.

Yesterday I spent a few hours (maybe about 5) grading stacks of papers. The majority of these papers was work from the sub this week, but some was older than that. I've been really proud of myself this year because I've been diligent in keeping up on the grading. I usually don't have to bring lots of it home, because I grade as they turn things in. That has been nice when it has come time to post midterms/final grades, because I can just press "submit" and it's all done, no going back and doing the grading.

Here is a picture of my count-down-to-the-last-day-of-school- chain. The kids are still amazed at this concept, but I had lots of comments about the "coolness" of the whole thing. (Actually, what was said was, "That's hella tight Mrs. Hubert!" or "That's the shiznit!") Really, it's just paper.

Well, I must go get ready for church. We both will get sustained and set apart today. My mom got me a nice, new grownup outfit to wear. (Seriously, I look like a grown up in the outfit, because, as my mom told me, "you're getting to be an old lady and you need to look the part of Primary president.")

All of the Primary Presidents I ever remember were OLD ladies with grey hair done into buns on top. (At least I think that's how they were). You must be the youngest Primary president in history. I bet the grownup outfit looked great, if only I had seen a picture of it.
