Who can believe that there are only 3 more days of school? Not I!
Much has happened in the last bit since I wrote last. I told ya I'd be busy. But, fear not, I'm back. I've got stories ranging from yearbook day to my Memorial Day weekend. Sit tight.
Last week at this time, I was anxiously awaiting Friday; yearbook day. I was bracing myself for what other teachers called the most chaotic day of the year, trying to prep my yearbook staff, and busting at the seems, hoping students would actually like our creation. When I got to school that morning, one fellow teacher remarked in passing, "You know, Lauren, the success of your first year depends solely on the next two hours." Thanks.
I think we came up with a very smooth distribution plan and had several teachers remark to me that yearbook distribution has never been better. The kids were quick, followed instructions, and didn't argue. We had two hours to distribute the books and then 10 minutes in each class to sign. At 11:30, all students were excused to a school-provided BBQ and yearbook signing in the cafeteria and outside. The overall atmosphere was pleasant.
As I walked through the halls during this time, I had several other teachers tell me that the yearbook has never looked better and that no one would know it was my first book. I felt ecstatic at this and couldn't stop smiling all day!!
After the bell rang at 12:40, the teachers gathered for a Memorial Day BBQ outside and had a really good time. They gave me a round of applause for the yearbook and I received many positive comments. I felt so relieved that the day was over and that I didn't have to worry about yearbooks until next year.
I had students sign my yearbook on Friday and today. Some of them are pretty fun to read. My favorite one is the title of my blog: "Dear Mrs. Hubert You're cool, for a teacher." I also got alot that said something like this: "H.A.G.S." I was so confused because I didn't know what that meant until one bright student in 6th period told me: Have A Good Summer.
Over Memorial Day, Ben and I traveled down to Levan with the Witt side of the family. I wasn't all that excited about going and it took me until about Provo on the way down to be excited. It ended up being a really fun and relaxing weekend so I'm glad I went. We took Zeus down; he did quite well on the farm and got lots of exercise with all the kids. We came back yesterday afternoon. As always, I ate a lot of food down there, but I feel ok because I'm going to ride my bike all week, except Friday.
Last week I made up a yearbook scavenger hunt using the hundreds of books I have from previous years. The students had to answer 40 questions about various things in the yearbook. It took them last Thursday and today to finish it. I thought it was quite a genius idea because they enjoy looking at the old books and it was a fun way to get some more points for their grade.
Tomorrow I'm having the students write two thank you notes. I want them to write thank you's for two of their teachers and then I will deliver the notes. I've had a few of these notes in my own box throughout the year and it makes the whole year worth it...and, I really don't know what else to have them work on. Thursday will be a 'chill' day and then Friday, they are only in my class for 15 minutes. I'm SO excited!!! Just a few more days and I'll be in Vegas, baby!!!
Oh...and...8 days until I'm 25. Yay!

It's hard for me to believe that you are finished with your first year..I really think this blog will be something for you to look back on for your whole teaching career.
And it sounds like the students really like you...."for a teacher,..."
And I'm excited to see you next week. I will call you on the weekend the coordinate our plans.
I read your comment on that obituary for Louie--I vaguely remember when you nannied for him..wasn't he sick then too? Sounds like he had lots of friends and will be missed. It's always tough to see young people die. When was it that you nannied for her?
Love ya
dadddddddd
Can you believe that you are done with your first year of teaching?!?!? Isn't it the greatest feeling!? I am so happy that your yearbook stuff went okay and that you have survived. Hope to see you and Ben this summer.
Love
Tammy
