made it another week

So the Monte Carlo in Las Vegas was on fire and it's still too cold in Utah.

I've just been reading some other blogs, most of which belong to people I don't know but because I'm a blogaholic, that's how I feed my addiction. I noticed that a lot of people start their posts one of two ways:
1. "It's been a while since I last wrote..."
2. "Well today..."

So my opening line there was written as an attempt to be different. Funny, right? (Though now that I've explained that it kind of takes away the humor...if you could only read my mind!)

Well anyway...

So glad today is Friday. This week has felt more like 4 months. I actually had an hour of "free time" last night and brushed off my Guitar Hero skills, which was therapeutic in so many ways. I got through The Killers song without missing any notes (of course I was playing on "Easy" so it wasn't really challenging)

Tomorrow I am going to a "Winter Workshop" provided by our school's Title One guy. It is at the district office and all my teacher buddies are going. We will be learning and training and eating. Oh, and the nice thing is we get paid $25 every hour. Nice.

After I got home from work today Ben and I made a quick trip to the library. I first had to pay my $5.25 fine because I felt guilty just walking inside and knowing I owed that much. Then, I picked up three really interesting looking books. My plan is to wrap up in a blanket and read my evening away.

My first selection is our teacher book club book of the month: John Grisham's "Playing for Pizza," which I've heard is about football. I like football just about as much as I like spraining my ankle (I actually like it more than that, but to read a book about it????) I will give a review as soon as I finish, which I aim to be tomorrow night.

My second book was one I choose merely because of the title: "Tutu Deadly" by Natalie Roberts. It has a picture of dance clothes and point shoes so if you know me, you know why I picked that. It kind of looks like it will be a guilty-pleasure-easy-read-with-chocolate-alone book.

And my last book I picked mainly because of this fantastic quote on the front cover: "Mystical quilts, a hunchbacked toad, and a wisecracking heroine..." Who wouldn't want to read that book?!?! It is called "The Fortune Quilt" by Lani Diane Rich.

The Anne Frank/Holocaust unit is moving along. Today we did kind of a question/answer period which was really successful. Except for the fact that some of their questions are tricky and deep. I know the history behind the events, but some of their questions caught me off guard and I didn't know the best way to answer without being too graphic. The great thing is that they are curious and interested. We'll start reading the play on Tuesday and that should take about 3 weeks.

I forgot to mention this little ditty in my last post, but Gov. Huntsman gave his State of the State address this week. I didn't get a chance to watch it, but I heard (and read) about one of his brilliant ideas for Utah education: Teachers teach 250 days a year and students rotate (as a college) so they only come to school 180 days. I will need to do a little more research on the reasoning of this, and I don't want to automaticaly say "How stupid?!?!?" because I want to be more informed. I bring it up only because I thought it was interesting and wanted to let it be known.

With those random rambling, I leave you with me and Ben's new favorite YouTube video:

After we watched this about 20 times in a row and laughed our bums off, I realized that perhaps the reason we haven't been blessed with kiddies of our yet is because we laugh at stuff like this and can't be trusted with the precious babes. Still funny, though, right?

Happy Weekend!

That is a really cute video! Lou, you HAVE to laugh at those kind of things with kids & everything else. It keeps you sane! I figure the healthy person laughs with a twinkle in their eye, but the unhealthy person yells & makes the child feel horrible for biting. They're learning through experience, right?

I have to tell you that every time I hear the "Teacher Feature" on KSL I think of you & all the lives you're affecting with your teaching! It's so fun to read your blog & see how your heart is really in your teaching. You really want your kids to succeed & be excited about learning. You're making a huge difference in their lives & I'm so proud to know you!

Those books - outside of the Grisham - sound tantalizing! I can't wait for the report! I'm craving a good book. I haven't had anything fabulous since the Twilight series & it's bumming me out. I want to read the latest Leven Thumps book, but the wait is forever long at the library. Have you read those? I really enjoyed them.

Anywho, miss you & hope all is well! Lots of love...
