mrs. huey

Ahh...the wonders of a long weekend and short week. I had four days off for the Labor Day weekend and it was wonderful. Today, Wednesday, was very much like a Monday at school, but now there are just two days left of the week. Awesome.

A little highlight of my holiday weekend: Hung out with mom on Friday (saw "Becoming Jane," loved it!), found out mom broke her wrist on Saturday (she fell off a ladder), went out to dinner and a movie with some high school friends Saturday night (spilled left over spaghetti all over the motorcycle), went to church on Sunday and then to a birthday dinner for sis-in-law, Hilary (she got a Wii...I'm so jealous!), watched "Pan's Labrynth" on Sunday night and absolutely LOVED it, slept in a bit on Monday, went to Oktoberfest (not so cool if you don't drink) Monday afternoon, spent the day Tuesday with best and longest pal, Sadie, gabbing about life, and worked out at the gym Tuesday eve with my hubby of almost 4 years.

As I said, today felt much like a normal Monday. But, I'm already really impressed with my 8th graders, who have figured out my crazy procedures (for the most part) and who are pretty darn respectful after my big respect spiel a few days ago.

Today I announced the staff positions for yearbook and journalism. I spent a few hours on Saturday working on these and I think most of the students are excited about their jobs. Of course, some still don't know exactly what they'll be doing, but they'll learn. I had them brainstorm ideas to include in yearbook/newspaper and it got them all more excited. The yearbook rep from Jostens will be in on Friday to talk to my yearbook students and get them all set up with accounts on yearbookavenue.com.

My 8th graders finaly finished their letters today. Talk about a pain staking task that really should have been easy. We've worked on it for almost 5 days and still some didn't have a rough draft finished. I've read a few letters so far and most did it right. I'll have more to read tonight and tomorrow. Like last year, this is a good way for me to see the writing abilities as well as get to know my students.

Apparently Mrs. Hubert is hard for some of my students in 4th period to say so on Friday a few of them approached me to ask if they could call me Mrs. Huey (like Hughie). I said fine, but also recommended Mrs. H, as that's even easier. They are funny students and I know they don't mean any disrespect. I feel like I've made a connection with most of my 8th graders and they feel comfortable coming to ask me things not relating to class.

Tonight was my first ESL class of the fall semester. We meet every Wednesday at West Lake from 4 to 7. Our teacher got their late and then let us out at 5:30, so it wasn't too bad. It will be an easy class, much easier than the summer classes. There are several teachers from my school, as well as some from my summer class, so it will be a fun time and I hope to learn a lot.

I suppose that does it for today, but to explain my picture: This is Ben and I as Germans at Oktoberfest. How sick do we look?!?!?!?! I've also added another picture of similar style: us as Mexicans on our Honeymoon cruise to Ensenada, Mexico in 2004.

I'm glad you loved "Pan's Labyrinth"--I've watched it twice in the last couple of months, which is unusual for me. I love that kind of movie.
Sounds like an eventful weekend! I am still going to take a trip to the desert sometime, but it's gotta cool down a little.
I don't know anything more about the job(didn't get the one I posted for) and I know all of us are just going nuts.
We will be working next week with a guy from India to help him understand our systems--hope he will recommend not to make the move!!
Love ya

And PS, I meant to tell you that I don't like "Mrs Huey"...reminds me of that cartoon, baby Huey. Tell them they can learn your name :)
