true aggie

In case you haven't seen it yet, Ben and I were on tv this morning. Go to KSL.com and look for the "Romantic-High Five" link. I hate seeing myself on tv, but we just watched through the whole thing again and had a good laugh.

Today was college spirit day, meaning that we were supposed to wear college attire/college colors. I wore (as you can see in the news segment) my BYU-I sweatshirt. I never said anything to my students about BYU-I's colors being blue and gray, but I was shocked when, totally unplanned, my whole advisory showed up this morning with lots of blue and gray on! It was great. I submitted our numbers for the competition and found out during lunch that we came in 2nd place! I will share the prize with them tomorrow; lots of college pens, rubber wrists bands from Utah State, iron on's from Snow College, and (this is my favorite) chap stick from Utah State (see, if you're a local, you know that to become a 'True Aggie,' one must kiss their sweat heart at a certain place on campus, thus the chap stick label which reads 'For the REAL Aggie' just made me laugh!) Tomorrow I've been asked to help read through the essay's that have been submitted for college week ("Why it is important to attend college and what I can do to get there.") I learned today that there are only 4 essays that have been turned in so the read-through won't be too difficult.

We're on Day 3 of reading our Holocaust book, Night. I'm quite excited about the student's reaction to this book...I only really have to pull a few teeth to get them to read and most seem to enjoy it, despite the depressing nature of the book. I am really trying to stress the point that if, as a society, we don't change our ways and stop being prejudice and intolerant of differences, another holocaust could happen. I really truly believe I have touched some of these students with that concept and I feel proud. I love having the students ask me questions...it means they are paying attention to what I'm saying and really want to learn.

We had our teacher book club yesterday and I must admit I am not too excited about the book chosen for the month of February. January's book was remarkable; we all loved it. This month, we will be reading "Mr. Darcy's Daughters," a sequel to the famous "Pride and Prejudice." I took English Lit. in college and never really got into it that much (besides some Keats poems and of course, Dickinson, but never Austen). I checked it out from the local library last night and tried to read, but couldn't seem to get into it. I may have to make a few attempts at this one before I see the magic, so to speak.

My hair is now mostly lightly pink but I have a group of students that have been passing around a petition that I keep my hair pink. I told them they could get as many signatures as they wanted, but I probably wouldn't do it again. I'm thinking my next hair color will be dark brown.

Well, a fun anniversary night; writing lesson plans and going to bed EARLY! (I couldn't sleep last night because of all the excitement and then I got up at 5:20 so I could make myself presentable for Coco.)
